Historical Aspect Of Jamnagar

Jam Raval, who was migrated from Kutch, founded Jamnagar in 1540. For about 400 years Jamnagar remained as the capital of nawanagar state. It was one of the prosperous and the biggest state of Saurashtra. In 1914, Jam Ranjitsingh initiated the town planning which exhibit the amazing fusion of old and new architecture. It is also known as the Paris of Saurashtra.  

Jamnagar played a pivotal role at the time of independence.  Jam sahib fully cooperated at the time of integration of princely state and helped to fulfil the vision of building new nation. He played pivotal role in the foundation of Saurashtra state and in renovation of Somnath temple as he sorted out many issues raised related to it

 Geography Of Jamnagar

It is located on the southern coast of Gulf of Kutch. It has hot dry summer which remains around 40 degrees and moderate winter with average temperature around 30 degree. It experiences rainfall with frequent occurrences of tropical storm. It is rich in variation in topography consisting of hills, landscape beaches with white and golden sands. It is having diverse marine species due to presence of mangroves and coral reef. The only India‘s marine sanctuary is situated Jamnagar.

Economic Aspect

It is endowed with abundance of mineral resources and fossil fuel.ie.crude oil. There are many industries established within the periphery of Jamnagar. Crude oil is extensively mined by reliance industry. It has also established refinery in Jamnagar. Refined crude oil is also exported to many countries. The cement industries at Sikka and Tata chemicals are other two major industries which are established in this area. ZANDU PHARMACY is also in Jamnagar which was established with the effort of Ayurvedacharya Zandu Bhattacharyaji.

Social Aspect

  • The population of Jamnagar is approx. 217000 in which Hindu constitutes 83 % followed by Muslims 14% of total population and others are in minority. It is dominated by Patels, Ahirs and Satvara.

Ranmal Lake: It is natural water body. As birds from different countries migrate here generally during winter, it becomes attractive site for bird watching.


Lakhota palace: it is situated in middle of Ranmal Lake. It is designed in such manner that only a few soldiers could combat huge army. The wall of palace is decorated with beautiful paintings. The palace has been transformed into museum now.


Khamblia gate of Jamnagar: it is having fine piece of architecture.


Manekbhai Muktidham Crematorium: Within it there is beautiful park library hundred of idols of god’s saints and beautiful carving of inscription of sermons as well as religious songs. Artistic representation at the park depicts that death is a part of cycle of life. It transformed the view of people regarding death and provides mental peace.


Ranjitsagar Dam: one can go to visit this dam for family picnic. The spot is very beautiful.
