HISTORY OF BARODA

The Imperial Baroda Province was ruled by the Hindu rulers till 1297.Chalukyan dynasty took over the Gupta Empire. After intense rivalry and Battle, it came under the control of Solanki Dynasty. Then it was captured by the Delhi Sultanate, which was later snatched by the Mughal Dyansty.The Power which fought against Mughals and established their sovereignty was Marathas’ Gaekwad.

The Glorious History of Gaekwad began when Maratha General Pilaji Rao conquered Songadh from Mughals in 1726.then his Successor and his son Damajirao defeated Mughals and conquered the state of Baroda in 1734.Slowly they intensified the degree of power and ruled the region till the Independence.

In 1875 Maharaja Sayaji Rao 3 came into power. His reign was considered as the Golden Period. It was an Era of progress and development in the field of Education, Commerce and Industrial sectors. Because of his efforts, Baroda was overwhelmingly revived and reformed .Thus the city is also known as Sayaji Nagari and it is also known as Sanskari Nagari.

After independence, Baroda was merged into the Bombay state. Later on when the Bombay Province was divided into Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1960, it became a part of Gujarat officially. The name of Baroda was change into Vadodara in 1974.

REFERENCE OF BARODA

  1. Poet Premananad mentioned about the capital of Gaekwad rulers as ‘Braveyard.’
  2. Some Englishmen traders and businessmen referred it as’ BRODERA’ on the basis of which the name Baroda was derived.

GEOGRAPHY OF BARODA

It is located on the bank of Vishwamaitra. The climate of Baroda is dry. Summer is hot. The temperature in summer remains generally around 40 degree. Winter remains mild child due to cold northerly winds. The temperature in winter remains around 15 degree. It receives rainfall between 75 cm to 110 cm from south west monsoon but infrequent heavy torrential rainfall brings storm and cause flood in the region which are catastrophic in nature

ECONOMIC ASPECT

As Baroda is entrusted with wide variety of resources many industries were established here. Some of the large scale industries which are in Baroda are

  1. Gujarat Refinery: it was established in1965, situated at Koyali in Vadodara.It is the second largest refinery owned by Indian Oil Corporation limited after the refinery at Panipat, Haryana.
  2. Gujarat state Fertilizer and chemical limited: It was established in 1962.It manufactures

 Plastic nylon and various chemicals like Urea, Ammonia, Phosphoric acid etc. The boost in the production of fertiliser caters the need of farmers and helps to provide food security.

  1. Indian Petrochemicals Corporation limited: it was established in 1969with a view to promote the usage of plastics in India. The Naphtha based complex is situated in vadodara.

Apart from these industries, Cooperatives are also being promoted over here. The Baroda Diary is the best example which provides milk to the people of the city.

SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS

  1. The Population of Baroda is 21 lakh, which ranks third in the Gujarat state in terms of number of Population.
  2. Maharaja Sayaji rao took special efforts to promote and developed the Educational sector due to which literacy ratio is approx 78%.Some of the efforts are as follows

He helped Motibhai Amin who was considered as pioneer for starting library activities in the state.Motibhai was also refereed by the people as ‘Charotar nu Moti’.

  • Maharaja Sayaji contributed his all books to the Central Library of baroda which is considered as one of the largest library in the state. It has achieved the status of the State Library.

                Besides these libraries there are another library like Hansa Mehta library of M.S University and  Jaisingh Rao library which is one of the oldest Library.

              Some of the prestigious colleges are also here which are as follows:

  • M.S.UNIVERSITY:It was established by Pratap Singh Gaekwad, who was the last ruler of the erstwhile Baroda State. He established it to fulfil the wish of his grandfather maharaja sayajirao 3 .It cater the need of people regarding the education.
  • THE Faculty of fine art and Music College is the only institution in the state providing degree courses.
  1. Sex ratio of baroda is 934 females per 1000 males. The condition of child sex ratio is very pathetic, which is very 897.

What to See and Do

PLACES TO VISIT

Laxmi Vilas Palace: It was built by Maharaja Sayajirao 3.It was based on Indo Saracenic Architecture. It is also known as Maharaja Palace.
Kirti Stambh: It is known as Tower of Fame or Truimph.
Kirti Mandir: It is kind of memorial where is portrait painting of ancestors and members of royal family are on the wall. Besides this there are excellent paintings depicting the Scene of Geeta. These paintings are painted by Nandanlal Bose of Santiniketan
The Baroda museum and Picture Gallery was founded in 1887 and completed by 1894 by Maharaji Sayajirao 3.It was based on the line of indo sarcenic architecture.

BARODA city is 6km away from airport. Generally domestic flights are available from major cities like Mumbai or Delhi. One having dearth of time can opt for flight.Those who are outsiders and want to visit adjoining areas and other cities like from Baroda to Ambaji, Baroda to Surat, Baroda Palitana and Baroda to Patan can opt for cab services.
